Set in the fictional world of Middle-Earth, The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) tells the story of a young hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). Frodo has been entrusted with an ancient Ring that the Dark Lord Sauron (Sala Baker) is trying to get back.
The evil Sauron wants the One Ring, so that he may conquer the lands of Middle-Earth and possess the magical abilities that the Ring gives.
When the wizard, Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan), discovers that the One Ring is the very ring the Dark Lord Sauron created to control all the beings of Middle-Earth, he tells Frodo that it must be destroyed.
Frodo must take the Ring to Mount Doom, the very volcano where it was forged many years before, and cast it into the eternal fires to destroy it. He begins his treacherous journey to Mt. Doom along with a Fellowship to protect him.
The Fellowship includes Frodo's hobbit friends, Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) as well as Gandalf and two human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean).
Legolas the Elf Archer (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli the Dwarf soldier (John Rhys-Davies) also accompany Frodo on his mission to destroy the One Ring in the cracks of Doom in Mordor.
On their journey in the first film of this great DVD boxset, the Fellowship travel through Rivendell, an Elfish domain and the forests of Lothlorien. Whilst there, they are greeted by Princess Arwen (Liv Tyler) her dad, Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Queen Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) who offer them help.
All the while, Lord Sauron, his evil Dark Riders and the disloyal wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) are in pursuit of Frodo and his friends. The Fellowship is forced into combat with Orcs, a troll and many other life-threatening hindrances on their way to destroying the Ring.
As the power of the One Ring grows, Sauron and his evil terrifying armies get stronger and more powerful. Frodo must overthrow the evil and save Middle-Earth, before it's too late.
The second film of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy DVD Boxset is The Two Towers (2002). It's another epic tale of good versus evil that continues the storyline of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Frodo and Sam must continue their journey to Mordor, in order to destroy the One Ring, but the journey is much more dangerous as the Fellowship has been split up.
They meet Gollum (Andy Serkis) on their travels, a twisted creature and the owner of the “precious” One Ring before Frodo and his uncle.
Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are in pursuit of the Uruk Hai (Saruman's army) who has captured Merry and Pippin. On their travels, they find Rohan, a kingdom about to be attacked by Saruman in an attempt to eradicate the race of men.
The people of Rohan are lead by their aging king, Théoden (Bernard Hill), but he is being controlled by Wormtongue (Brad Dourif) who is one of Saruman's secret spies. The people of Rohan quickly become allies with Legolas and his crew, meaning the rebellion against the evil Dark Lord expands.
Merry and Pippin manage to escape and make it to the Fangorn Forest where they meet Treebeard (John Rhys-Davies) and discover that Gandalf has been resurrected in the form of the White Wizard.
With the two towers between Mordor and Isengard (Barad-dur and Orthanc) uniting in their desire for the destruction of Middle-Earth, the rebellion against Sauron must launch an attack.
Sam and Frodo aren't too sure about how much they can trust Gollum, but they use his knowledge to guide them through to Mordor where they must get in order to rid of the Ring.
With a battle between Gandalf's army and the Evil Dark Lord's troops imminent, the War of the Ring begins.
Aragorn learns just how difficult the task ahead is when he hears Saruman's 10,000 strong, bloodthirsty army has been bred especially to kill. All that and he has his love dilemma with Eowyn (Miranda Otto) and Arwen to worry about too!!
The third and final film in the Lord of the Rings Box set Trilogy is The Return of the King (2003). This concluding tale tells the story of how Gollum first came into possession of the Ring and demonstrates how the ring can easily corrupt people.
Frodo is struggling with the dark power that the Ring possesses and is almost finding the pressure too much. Frodo and Sam think they are finally getting closer to Mordor and their final destination of Mount Doom, but are unaware that the twisted Gollum is leading them into a trap, so that he can reclaim the One Ring.
Aragorn and his fellowship return to Rohan, after defeating Saruman at Isengard and Helm's deep. When Pippin gets into trouble however, Aragorn and Gandalf must go to Minus Tirith, capital of Gondor to help. Denethor (John Noble), the steward of Gondor, is in a bad way mentally and the city is getting ready to battle Sauron's army.
The fate of every Middle-Earth creature is to be decided by a climactic battle in Pelennor, where the rebels must overpower the evil Lord Sauron once and for all.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy DVD Boxset has been a great financial success and the three amazing films have picked up a whopping 17 Academy Awards!
We definitely recommend this affordable DVD boxset as a top gift choice for film fanatics.
