The first series of The Royle Family DVD Box Set introduces the main family (the Royles) and the characters include the jobless, overweight and idle Jim (Ricky Tomlinson) and his doting wife Barb (Sue Johnston).

They have two children together – Anthony (Ralf Little) and Denise (Caroline Ahern).
The Royle Family is a satire of a typical northern working class family and it is the dull and dry humour that makes the family so realistic.

There is no canned laughter to take away from the realism of the sitcom, which is perhaps what makes it even funnier.

The Royles' lives are pretty much dependent on their television and most scenes that make up this funny DVD Box Set are shot with a single camera in the front room.

Jim is foul mouthed and full of witty one-liners, whilst his mother in-law Nana (Liz Smith) likes a drink or two and discusses death on a regular basis.

The first series in the DVD box set sees Denise getting wed to Dave (Craig Cash), who works in the furniture removal business and occasionally does the odd mobile disco.

The Royle's neighbours Joe (Peter Martin), Mary (Doreen Keogh) and Cheryl (Jessica Stevenson) frequently join them in the living room to participate in a bit of channel-hopping and gossip.

There are sporadic moments of sentimentality, for example the wedding the sixth episode, but the series remains effortlessly funny throughout with its strong focus on the mundane way of life.

Aside from the wedding, Jim's birthday and a family sing song with a banjo, not much happens in series one of The Royle Family DVD Boxset which really is what makes it so amusing to watch.

The second series (1999) of The Royle Family DVD Box set kicks off with Denise announcing that she is pregnant, giving Dave a reason to be even more “under the thumb”, as it were.

There's a whole lot more living room action and some hilarious plots, such as suspicion of Anthony's sexuality, a lovers tiff between Barb and Jim and more of Nana's anecdotes.

It's the second series of the DVD box set that introduces us, finally, to Anthony's girlfriend Emma (Sheridan Smith).

Denise goes into labour three weeks early on the bathroom floor, leaving Jim with the hilarious one-liner “Are you sure it's not just a bloody big piss, love?”

Again, there's a fair few heartfelt moments but the second series doesn't fail to deliver plenty of giggles.

As the third series (2000) of The Royle Family begins, it seems Denise expects Dave to do most of the work in terms of bringing their son 'Baby David' up, whilst she puts her feet up.

Anthony tells The Royles he's off to London with his troublemaker mate Darren (Andrew Whyment) to find a record contract for their band “Exit” and there's a hilarious scene with Jim and his mate Twiggy (Geoffrey Hughes) decorating the dining area of the house whilst dancing to 'Mambo No. 5'.

At Baby David's Christening, we meet Twiggy's mouthy girlfriend Michelle (Sally Lindsay) who doesn't really impress the Royles.

The Christmas Special shows Jim's lifelong dream coming true, as he gets Sky TV, meaning more sitting around the box no doubt!

The 2006 special “The Queen Of Sheba” is six years after Baby David's Christening.

Denise is pregnant again and Anthony and Emma have a son, Lewis, together. Nana is living with the Royles and Cheryl is on yet another weight loss mission.

The next Christmas special (2008) in The Royle Family DVD Box Set is called “The New Sofa” and sees Denise attempting to cook Christmas dinner, yet failing miserably.
