Set in Manhattan, New York City, Friends follows 6 close mates through a series of ups and downs, with a strong emphasis on the importance of friendship.

Rachel Green is the show's fashion enthusiast who has known Monica since high school, but lost touch previous to when the show commences. Her most noticeable role in Friends is as Ross's on-off girlfriend, and their relationship dynamic changes almost every series.

We also see Rachel try and climb the career ladder, starting as a waitress all the way to becoming a Fashion Buyer for Ralph Lauren.

Monica Geller is Rachel's best friend and Ross's younger sister. She is often portrayed as having an obsessive-compulsive personality, especially regarding cleanliness and tidiness.

She is highly competitive, which despite its faults, allows her to achieve her position as Head Chef at an up-scale Manhattan restaurant, and there are also many references of Monica's desire to have a husband and children.

Phoebe Buffay is Friends' most eccentric character, who writes and plays her own songs in Central Perk. Her main job is as a masseuse, and despite offering many words of wisdom, is still quite naive (for instance, as an adult she still believed in Santa Claus).

She has firm beliefs about animal and environmental rights, and her best friend is probably Joey who is on the same 'wave-length'.

Joey Tribbiani is an aspiring actor of Italian-American origin, whose main loves include food and women. Often unlucky in love, Joey is the only character to never have a long-term relationship, but goes on many dates thanks to his catch-phrase, 'How you doin'?' Despite having had a lead role in serial-drama Days of our Lives, Joey's career never really takes off.

Chandler Bing is Ross's oldest friend, Joey's flatmate, and later marries Monica despite having a fear of commitment. The show often jokes that no-one knows what his job is, although we are aware he is an executive in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration.

Chandler is the clown of the group, always making jokes, and has a 'quality' that leads many people to initially think he is gay.

Ross Gellar is a successful palaeontologist, and a three-time divorcee. He has a son with his lesbian ex-wife, Carol, and has frequent relationship battles with Rachel.

Ross and Monica often experience sibling rivalry, especially as Ross was the 'golden child', but remain very close.

Season One

Rachel turns up in Central Perk in her wedding dress, having left her fiancé at the alter, and moves in with Monica. Ross struggles to tell Rachel how he feels about her, at the same time his estranged lesbian wife is pregnant. Joey and Phoebe work on their careers, whilst Chandler deals with girlfriend, Janice.

Season Two

Ross is dating an old friend, Julie, un-aware that Rachel has fallen in love with him. Joey lands a lead role as Dr. Drake Ramorary in Days of our Lives, Monica starts dating an older, family friend, and Chandler is stuck with a crazy room-mate.

Season Three

Ross and Rachel's relationship becomes strained due to her new job in Bloomingdales. Ross and Rachel temporarily break up; however, Rachel decides to make it permanent when Ross sleeps with someone else. Meanwhile, Phoebe meets her half-bother, and Monica dates a millionaire.

Season Four

Phoebe becomes a surrogate for her brother and his wife, becoming pregnant with triplets. Rachel and Monica lose a bet to Chandler and Joey, meaning having to swap apartments, and Ross meets English Emily, who he marries in London at a wedding which runs less than smoothly.

Season Five

Monica and Chandler venture on a secret relationship whilst Ross an Emily struggle to save their marriage. Phoebe gives birth to her brother's triplets, Joey (almost) lands the lead in a film, and Rachel plays hard to get.

Season Six

Ross and Rachel's marriage is established after a drunken mistake in Las Vegas, but Ross refuses to divorce her. Monica and Chandler move in together, and Rachel moves in with Phoebe. Joey lands a lead in 'Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E,', and Ross becomes a university lecturer.

Season Seven

Monica and Chandler prepare for their wedding, and Rachel and Phoebe fight over being the maid of honour. Joey returns to Days of Our Lives, and Rachel dates her assistant, Tag.

Season Eight

Rachel is pregnant, and we find out Ross is the father. They agree to have the baby together, but Joey starts to get feelings for Rachel. Rachel has the baby, but confusion rises when Joey 'proposes' to Rachel.


Season Nine

Rachel and Ross are living together with baby Emma, whilst Monica and Chandler find out they are unable to conceive a baby of their own.

Phoebe starts to date Mike, but old flame, David, threatens their relationship. A love square is formed between Rachel, Ross, Joey and new girlfriend, Charlie...who will end up with who?

Season Ten

Phoebe's dream wedding is threatened due to a snow storm, Rachel and Joey struggle to have a relationship, and Monica and Chandler decide to adopt. All loose ends are tied up, but will it be Happy Ever After?
