The Simpsons DVD Box Set parodies a typical middle-class American family made up of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, focusing on American lifestyle, popular culture and society, and especially television.

The main Simpson unit consist of possibly the most well-known characters in TV history; Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

The patriarch of the cartoon is the father, Homer, whose buffoonish, childish and adolescent behaviour clashes with his parental expectations, and his job as a safety engineer at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant.

Marge is a stereotypical housewife and mother who often struggles with her role of homemaker.

Although mostly unemployed, Marge has had many short-lived jobs to inject excitement into her life. However, Marge usually realises that she is happiest being a mother, and returns home.

Bart is the only Simpson son, but has enough mischievousness and disrespect of authority to supply the whole of Springfield! Rebellious Bart is possibly the best known cartoon character of all time, having his own catchphrases and trademark gags which appear in almost all The Simpson's episodes.

If he is not making life hell for his father, he is creating trouble elsewhere, either at school or on the streets.

Maggie is the Simpson golden child, who is academically and socially very mature for her age.

Despite being almost opposite to her brother, Lisa and Bart have always been very close, often helping each other out in dangerous situations. Despite being only 13, Lisa is a vegetarian, an avid human and animal rights campaigner, musician, and a Buddhist.

The youngest Simpson, Maggie, is just a baby, and apart from uttering the odd word, never speaks.

Her trademark is her dummy and falling over flat on her face, yet despite these infant qualities, Maggie is actually a very intelligent baby, who has often helped her siblings out of dangerous situations.

Other regular family members include Homer's father, Abraham, who resides at a retirement complex. There are also Marge's sisters, Patty and Selma, the chain-smoking twins who simply love making hell for Homer who they quite publically dislike.

Outside the Simpson family are many, many other Springfield characters. Most notably are the Simpson's next door neighbours, the Flanders.

Ned, Maude, Rod and Tod are the show's well-mannered, good-natured and highly religious family, who are often portrayed as the anti-Simpson family. Ned and Maude do not allow their children to have any contact with most American popular culture, as they believe that TV, music and games only instil bad and violent values into the nation's children.

Other regular characters include Springfield Elementery School principle, Seymour Skinner, who is Bart's nemesis (and vice versa), Homer's friend Lenny and Carl, police Chief Clancy Wiggum, wealthy and powerful villain Charles Montgomery Burns, his assistant Waylon Smithers, the Rev.

Lovejoy, Kwik-E-Mart worker Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, barman Moe Syzslak, TV star Krusty the Clown, ex-Krusty sidekick Sideshow Bob, Springfield Major Joe Quimby, Bart's teacher Edna Krabappel, and the children's favourite TV cartoon cat and mouse, Itchy and Scratchy.

Each series alludes to so many cultural references, whether it's TV, film, music, literature, history, travel, science or education.

Because there are so many explicit and implicit references, viewers of all generation can enjoy the show.

Kids can enjoy the adventures and physically comedy of the characters, whilst adult viewers can enjoy the satirical approach to modern America (although I'm sure they still enjoy fart jokes just as much as the youngsters!).
